Figurative Sculpture

I am best known for my bronze sculptures of animals, namely thoroughbred horses, birds and dogs.  One notable critic on encountering my very first bronze sculpture Point to Point at Saratoga in 1981 opined that I would be known as the "The Remington of the Racetrack."

 

My bronze sculptures may be found in numerous museum, private, corporate and public collections throughout the World as well as on permanent public display in Washington DC, New York NY, Annapolis MD, and Birmingham and Montgomery, Al.  My studio is located in Mooresville, North Carolina where my works in progress may be seen by scheduling an appointment.  Commissions for new work, either figurative or abstract, are welcomed.

My most recent major figurative sculpture was a 2016 bronze of three life-size St Bernard dogs for the new College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. 

An artist must follow what inspires them. In my life, I have found that inspiration is best found around places and animals of extraordinary and evocative beauty. In recognizing beauty where it is to be found, my own understanding expanded and my capacity to convey only increased. Horses and other animals of remarkable strength and grace reflect controlled, natural, flawed function. Mechanisms of intricate design, like clocks, introduce a purposed creativity and a meaning to the perpetual, paced transitions; devices that cannot account for anything but what a human creates for it. In line with these appreciations, however, is a prolonged and unyielding love for the one of the most ubiquitous yet unique forms of expression; the portrayal of the horizon, wherever it may be found. 

Few can deny the tremendously evocative nature of a horizon, and fewer still could justify it. It is so much at once, to so many; a reminder of inevitable transition, or a confirmation of some greater cosmic machination. Indeed, it is enough that some should find it pretty.

 

To an artist, however, someone trained to create and look beyond what the eye immediately dictates, it is a veritable goldmine of ideas, thoughts, grandiose opportunities and diverse introspections.

 

Around the world, horizons take a different shape, a different shade, a different tone. High atop the cliffs of the Grand Canyon, radiant orange light, washing across the landscape with the setting sun, warms the ancient stone pillars for the last time in the day. Yet in the Antarctic, that same comforting salutation is marred by the looming, ongoing night; the sun, in these parts, will not return for months on end.

Landscape sculptures and figurative sculptures feature different challenges in their creation. What is figurative sculpture? Essentially, anything that inspires the work. Figurative sculptures are representative of something concrete, and generally extant. Animals and such are my favorite sources for bronze sculpture work.

Landscape sculpture, on the other hand, is precisely what it sounds like; art that is based on, or perhaps  placed upon a given or perceived  landscape. Natural inspiration has served as an obvious catalyst for many volumes of sculpture figures; painters of the middle ages would record starry nights before sunny days, and even cavemen of millenia past reflected their environments with crude drawings and carvings, often upon that very same environment itself, allowing us an insight to the unrefined and yet thoughtful minds of long ago.

In more recent times, sculpture in particular has served as an exceptional means of not only reflecting landscapes, but enhancing and beautifying them. Sculptures of every style and media from monumental abstract or figurative sculpture in bronze, stainless steel , or stone to topiaries of unimaginable form and complexity enhance today's gardens as well as in their more traditional places of prominence such as prominent buildings , public places and museums. 

 

Over the years I’ve created a variety of bas-relief and stand alone sculptures that embody evocative landscapes and figures, all of which would be at home within the home or in many cases in an idyllic garden setting.
