The process
of casting paper begins with the completion of a clay model I have created of my sculpture concept.
As soon as the clay model is complete, I make a rubber
mold from the clay model. That rubber mold becomes a negative of my clay model. When
the rubber in the mold is cured, and the mold thoroughly cleaned of any remaining debris from the clay model I slowly press
a high-linen content, liquid paper pulp into the mold. Depending on the depth of the relief, as many as
three to four layers of pulp may be required to complete a single sculpture. Once the pulp has been pressed
into the mold, I press the entire sculpture with sponges until all excess water has been removed. The
sculpture, still in the mold is placed in a low humidity room where it will be allowed to dry for anywhere from two to five
days. Only when the sculpture is completely dry can it safely removed from the mold and prepared
for installation.
